“Institute?” Lizi mused aloud as she read the sign on the impressive gate she was now stood at. The full sign read: The Charles Xavier Institute for Gifted Children. “I wonder if the guy realises that makes his school sound like a mental facility.”
*It has been pointed out. Do come up* the calm voice of Charles Xavier sounded in her head, as the rather large and impressive gate swung open.
“Ominous, much?” Lizi muttered to herself as she slung her bag over her shoulder and ambled up the drive towards the mansion.

Scott Summers stood at the window of the bedroom he shared with his wife, Jean, and watched the small woman walking towards the building.
“What do you think, Jean?” Scott said, sighing as he turned to face his wife.
“About what? About Lizi? I think she could be a great asset to the team. Besides, I know we’re all First Aid trained and Hank and I are doctors, but you’ve got to admit that a qualified paramedic would be more useful in an emergency situation than two genetics researchers,” Jean chuckled, walking over to her husband and slipping her hand into his. She glanced over his shoulder at Lizi, who seemed to be having a staring contest with the fountain. Lizi turned her face to the house and after a second of searching, noticed Jean and Scott, and waved. Jean smiled and waved back, pulling her husband around to face the window. Lizi pointed the ground, asking if Jean and Scott were coming down to meet her with the Professor; Jean responded by nodding and turned from the window. Scott lowered his hand slowly and followed his wife from the room. Frowning, he called after her,
“Hey hon, did you notice she has pink hair?”

Lizi smiled to herself; ‘someone has issues with sharing his team then’ she thought, noting the reluctance of Scott to meet her immediately. “Well, here goes nothing,” she said, adjusting her bag and walking up the steps. As she scanned the glass doors for signs of people walking past, she noticed a large crack towards the bottom of one. Shrugging, she reached up a hand and pressed the doorbell. Very presently a small Asian-American girl came running to the door and skidded on the polished floor until she finally came to a halt by grabbing the door handle.
“Hey! You’re the new one, right?” Jubilee asked excitedly, opening the door without the cracked glass. “See! They all say I’m not responsible enough to be on the team but I remembered who you were without even meeting you! I am such a grown up,” she finished in a huff.
“How much of a grown up?” Lizi asked, more than slightly amused. Jubilee stopped her silent fuming and looked up at Lizi. “I mean how old are you,” Lizi said smiling.
“Old enough,” Jubilee said, searching Lizi’s face. Lizi nodded and smiled when the girl in front of her popped bubble gum all over her face. “Ohmigod!” Jubilee exclaimed. “That’s soo embarrassing,” she shrieked as she ran into the room behind. Lizi chuckled to herself as Jubilee ran past her. ‘Cute kid,’ she thought.
“That’s Jubilee. She’s fourteen,” said a voice behind her. Lizi whirled around and saw the man who invited her here.

Professor Charles Xavier sat in his wheelchair in the doorway to a rather impressive library. His hands folded neatly in his lap. The two mutants watched each other for a few seconds, Xavier not wanting to push and Lizi seeing if he would. Seemingly happy that he would let her do it her way, to an extent, Lizi put her bag down on the floor and looked around her.
“Nice pile of bricks you got here,” she said, eying the very large entrance hallway. “This room is bigger than my apartment alone!” Professor Xavier smiled at this as he moved toward the centre of the room, where Lizi was standing. He then looked up and around him as well
“I rather like it. My family has lived here for generations,” looking at the portrait of his mother that was hanging above the doorway. Xavier slowly lowered his gaze to Lizi once again to find her already watching him with great interest. He smiled gently again. “Normally it’s me that does the watching.”
“Well I don’t know you so I thought I’d just be a bit careful,” Lizi paused and then, seeming to feel them, turned to see Jean and Scott walk down the stairs.
“Hi Lizi,” Jean said, smiling warmly.
“Hey,” she replied. “Hey Scott,” she continued, looking Scott dead in the eyes, something most people can’t do, given the red ruby quartz lenses on his glasses.
“You’re late,” Scott replied bluntly.
“Guess we’d better not stand here hob-nobbing all day then,” she said sweetly. Turning to the professor she clapped her hands together lightly. “Let’s get down to business!”
“First things first, Ms…” Professor Xavier said, tailing off to allow Lizi to fill in her surname.
“Bayliss, but please, just call me Lizi.”
“OK. First things first Lizi, let’s meet the team.”

Professor Xavier led Lizi through to the library from which he had come and as she walked in, Lizi noticed the other X-Men stood all around the room. On a large luxurious armchair beside the door, a blond haired man was lounging, with beautiful white wings spread out behind the chair. It was these wings that gave him his codename, Angel. Across his lap, lying like a pampered cat was a lavender haired woman with it fanned out across her shoulders. Against the wall to Lizi’s right was Rogue, leant against the wall. On the far side of her, Gambit was leaning on one arm, placed on the wall beside Rogue’s head. Beside Rogue stood, or rather crouched, an incredibly large, hairy, blue animal looking thing. Lizi cocked her head and smiled as the creature looked up from the book he was reading and took off his glasses. On the other side, beside Gambit, Wolverine was slouched against the wall, his face barely visible beneath the brow of his hat. Next to him stood an excited Jubilee, chewing her gum rapidly, eyes shining. There was a strange ‘bamf’ sound to Lizi’s left and as she turned she saw a blue skinned creature appear, surrounded by a puff of black and purple smoke. Lizi wrinkled her nose as the smell of sulphur reached her and through the smoke, and through the wall, a small brown haired woman stepped.
“Kitty! Kurt! You know that so freaks me out when you do that!” Jubilee shrieked at them. Lizi smiled and looked at the pair. The woman, who Lizi could only assume was Kitty, smiled sweetly at Jubilee.
“We’re so sorry Jubilee! You know we don’t do on purpose. Honest,” she said to the young girl. Beside her the blue skinned man nodded solemnly, doing the puppy-dog impression with his bright yellow eyes. The assembled group chuckled softly. As the smoke cleared, Lizi’s own eyes were drawn to the one member of the team she had not yet noticed. A tall African woman stood with perfect posture, thus drawn up to her full height, her white hair falling softly around her shoulders like the first snow in winter. Her startling blue eyes closed softly as she smiled at the exchange and as they opened they locked onto Lizi’s.

“Ladies and Gentlemen, may I introduce Lizi Bayliss. Lizi, this is Betsy Braddock and Warren Worthington,” the Professor said, snapping Lizi out of her reverie, and gesturing to the pair in the armchair. Warren smiled warmly and nodded. Betsy also nodded, but with slightly less of a smile. “I believe you have met Rogue, Remy, Logan and Jubilation.” The four nodded in turn so Lizi could note which names went with which X-Men. “Beside Rogue is Dr Hank McCoy, with their slightly dramatic entrance, this is Kurt Wagner and Kitty Pryde.” Kitty smiled warmly and Kurt bowed low, his tail taking the place of his arm and sweeping across his torso as he bowed. Lizi nodded gracefully in return and as she brought her head back up, re-focussed on the African, snow-haired lady. “This is Ororo Munroe,” Professor Xavier said softly.
“Welcome to our home, Ms Bayliss,” Ororo said elegantly, her thick African accent only accentuating every word.
“Um. Oh, uh, thanks,” Lizi stammered, mouth agape at the slender woman watching her with crystal blue eyes.
“I think there will be a little more time to get to know the other X-Men later. I believe a tour is in order. Rogue, Gambit, would you mind?” the Professor asked.
“Not at all. C’mon Remy,” Rogue said, prodding Gambit as she straightened up. “All right sugah. We’ll take you round. Can you flah?” Rogue asked as she walked across the room. Lizi snapped her attention away from Ororo, who was still watching her intently.
“What? Oh, fly. Yeah. Why?”
“Well ol’ Remy can’t so ah’ll give you a tour of stuff only us flighted five can get to,” Rogue smiled at Ororo, Jean and Warren. “We can always find peaceful places away from the others.”
“Don’ you wan’ be near ol’ Gambit no more cherie?” Gambit pouted, it being his turn to pull the puppy dog eyes look, slightly hampered by the red irises, making him appear rather demonic. Rogue didn’t seem to either notice or care and laughed.

As they walked around the grounds, Lizi began to truly understand quite how huge the school was. She also began to realise that it was actually a teaching school. As they walked, there were classes going on nearby. A basketball game had disintegrated into a name-calling contest.
“Tha’s Generation X. They’re going t’ branch off an take on some of our smaller missions,” Rogue explained, gesturing towards a group of younger mutants, including Jubilee, doing some martial arts training with Logan.
“Dere’s some ting’s ‘dat are too small for ‘de grown ups so we ‘tink ‘de little un’s could do it for us,” Gambit added, grinning. Rogue playfully swatted him on the arm. Gambit’s eyes flickered as he tried to hide the fact that since Rogue had super strength, it really did hurt! Lizi smiled at the pair as Rogue lifted off from the ground and beckoned Lizi to follow. Lizi’s smile became broader and she jumped forward as bounced lightly before taking off. Rogue blew a kiss towards Gambit as the two ‘flighted’ women flew higher.
“Why’d you do that lil’ hoppy thing jus’ now?” Rogue asked Lizi, straightening out and flying towards the end of the garden.
“I don’t know. I need to jump to take off for some reason. Never understood it really. It does mean if I fall for any reason I usually end up flying again!”
“Why? Ah don’t get it.”
“Well because I have a lot of feline aspects to my powers, I always land on my feet. And so if I fall, I land on my feet but it acts as a jump and I take off again.”
“So that’s why you did all them flips and stuff in the car park. Ah just thought you was being flashy!” Rogue laughed. “How do cats, and you I guess now, always land on your feet?”
“There’s some kind of involuntary reflex in our spines or something and we always twist in mid-air so we are facing feet down when we hit the floor. I think,” Lizi said, screwing her nose up, trying to think. “I’ve never really had my powers explained to me.”
“Me neither,” Rogue said sadly. “Ah figured out pretty quickly what happened though.” Rogue tailed off as they reached a cliff. She gently flew down and sat on the edge of the cliff. Lizi floated down to join her. “It’s pretty hard not to notice when you’re thirteen, kiss your boyfriend and he keels over and is in a coma for three days. What’s even more scary is ah’ had all o’ his memories too. That’s when I figured out ah had absorbed a lil’ bit of him into me.” Lizi just sat quietly for a few moments and then looked up from the sea and smiled at Rogue.
“At least you could get a boyfriend! I was born with pointy ears and yellow eyes. I could hardly even get a doctor or a midwife to come near me!” Rogue blew a strand of white hair out of her eyes and looked up at Lizi.
“You don’t have yellow eyes,” she said, squinting slightly and looking from eye to eye on Lizi’s face. “They’re green like Jean’s.” Lizi bowed her head slightly and fiddled with her eyes and Rogue smiled with realisation as she watched Lizi take two coloured contact lenses out to reveal yellowy-green feline eyes.
“As I said, I have many feline aspects to my powers,” Lizi said smiling broadly. Rogue stretched her arms above her head and got to her feet.
“Right then. Let’s get you down to the Danger room and put you through your paces Miss Feline aspects,” she said chuckling as helped Lizi to her feet.
“Sure thing,” Lizi said smiling as they both lifted off from the ground and started towards the mansion. “I prefer the name Felix.”
“Felix it is then! I think you could probably settle in here quite nicely,” Rogue said. Lizi smiled to herself and saw Ororo summoning rain clouds to water the flowerbeds. ‘So do I,’ she thought to herself nodding softly. ‘So do I.’
