"Can't you two give it a rest?" Rogue hissed as she and Kitty hurried down the hall. "Every time I have to come get you it's because you're going at it like rabbits!"
Kitty rolled her eyes. "Ever think that maybe you should just stop looking for me then?" She smirked as Rogue had to swallow a response, their entrance into the downstairs study imminent.
Professor Xavier smiled pleasantly, though it was tinged with sadness. "Ah, we can begin. Kitty Pryde is one of our older students here. She's actually about to graduate and possibly attend one of the foremost science programs in the country..." He smiled proudly at her but the expression fell as she returned the expression with cool regard.
Frowning, he continued, "She will explain the Danger Room to you and show you the dormitory wings."
Kitty smiled tightly and nodded. Beside her, Rogue was very quiet. "Okay, well, come on then," she chirped. Jean was marshalling the rest of the students into a semblance of order for her part of the tour. "Switch off in the rec room in an hour?" she asked lightly, carefully avoiding the Professor's gaze.
"Sure," Jean nodded, glaring briefly at a glowing boy. "Um, house rules are no powers indoors," she told him kindly in her best I'm In Charge Here voice.
The boy narrowed his eyes at her. "You're using yours." He jerked his chin imperiously. "You're reading my mind."
"That would be me," Professor Xavier cut in, smirking faintly. "Good attempt, though, Mark." He nodded to Jean. "I'll be meeting with the parents in the upstairs study if you need me."
Kitty turned her back on the room and marched out stiffly, Rogue in tow along with the three students whom she had been assigned to. "Okay, I don't know how much you know about the Institute, but I know you're here because the Professor invited you, right?" She turned and walked backwards a few paces down the hall. The three new students nodded. "Okay, then, I can be frank."
"And I'll be Alice," Rogue muttered, smirking slightly.
Over the giggles of the three students, Kitty sighed but grinned a little. "I'll be open," she corrected. "We're here because we're not like most of the people in the world, right? We're mutants."
"Mom says I'm just gifted," one of the three, a little girl of about ten with carrot red hair and a spattering of violently bright freckles lisped. "Even when I blowed up the car, she said I was gifted."
Kitty blinked rapidly as she assessed that information. "Well, try not to blow anything up here please," she finally managed. "We're all gifted here, and we all are learning to use our gifts in the best way for us while learning to be part of society."
"It sounds like a prison," another one of the students gruffed, a tall boy with a shock of black hair and eerily flat silver eyes.
"I like this one," Rogue murmured. "He sounds alright."
Kitty groaned inwardly and pushed the button for the elevator to take them down to the Danger Room. She began her rehearsed spiel on the Danger Room's purpose and safety measures, making sure to emphasize that this visit was only a visit and not a chance to "play." Rogue made agreeing noises but Kitty had the distinct feeling something was about to go a bit pear shaped as the elevator lurched to a halt at the end of it's journey. The power blinked once before the doors opened into the silvery gray of the hall leading to the Danger Room. "Okay, follow me," Kitty said into the silence, the power fluctuation having struck the chattering trio quiet. "Rogue, ride herd," she muttered. She did not like how the dark haired boy was looking around, like he wanted to bolt. _It's probably just curiosity, _Kitty chided herself. _Stop being so paranoid. _ She paused before the sliding door leading to the room itself and frowned. The red light was on and the lock was engaged. "Rogue, I thought the room was empty until five..."
"Supposed to be," the other teenager replied, frowning at the lock. "It ain't a student code. Maybe Logan?"
"Why does she get a cool name?" the boy suddenly complained. "I don't think your parents named you Rogue!"
Rogue bared her teeth. "Nope, I picked that myself the night I sold my soul to Satan over the body of a dead virgin!" She turned back to Kitty, the swift silence that fell again over their charges oddly gratifying to her harried soul. "Can ya phase through and see?"
"I'll short out the locks and whatever else is in the way," she sighed. As she spoke the red "in use" light blinked out, replaced by the yellow "caution" light. "Oh...okay then..." Automatically, she stepped back, herding the charges with her. The door slid open and Kurt stumbled out, coughing, a great gout of white smoke coming with him. "Kurt!" she cried, starting forward to grab him before realizing the horrified gasps behind her were not due to the smoke but to the fact Kurt was in his natural, blue, state. "Holo?" she asked softly, moving to block him from the student's view.
"Nein," he coughed. "Melted," he held up the dead device, coughing again though it sounded somewhat sad. "Er...hello," he tried with false brightness to the students huddling around Rogue. "Um...it's not usually so smoky in there!"
"What happened?" Rogue demanded, trying to look past Kurt and through the still-thick smoke.
"I don't know!" he all but cried. "I was in there running a quick sim before you all came down and...kablooey."
"Kablooey?" Rogue repeated dryly.
"Kablooey," he nodded.
Kitty sighed and glanced at her tour. "Are you okay?"
"Ja...but I'll never get the smell of smoke out of mein fur..." He glanced again at the melted holo and at the startled students. "I guess there's no use in being coy at this point..." He disappeared in a blink, leaving the older girls with their charges.
"Is he..." The carrot-haired girl began, then shook her head. "And I thought I was weird."
Rogue sighed. "Come on...let's just keep going. We'll find Logan an' tell him on the way, if he hasn't smelled the smoke already..."
Kitty nodded in agreement, ushering the others onward. She was not three steps down the hall before the only one to remain silent thus far, a very short, very pale young girl with a halo of white-blonde frizz, turned and dashed back to her. "What's wrong?" Kitty asked, motioning for Rogue to keep going. "Do you need the bathroom or something?" The little girl shook her head and motioned for Kitty to come closer. Her eyes were wide and so blue they were nearly purple, drawing Kitty in it seemed. "Are you sick?" Kitty reached out to lay her hand on the girl's shoulder and had a moment of pure bliss until everything went dark.
