The Way Home

The Way Home

The fifteen hour drive took felt like it took even longer after they left the mansion. Rogue would cry softly to herself in the backseat when she slept on Remy’s lap, shivering with the memories.
Remy rubbed her shoulders to help ease the chills from her body, and whispered to her in his Cajun French, smoothing her hair and brushing the tears from her face with a tissue.
Ororo sat in the front seat to give the two privacy while Logan drove untalking. Hearing Rogue’s sobs were breaking both of their hearts. They knew she felt guilty and ashamed, but it wasn’t her fault. Not really.
It hadn’t been her choice to be a mutant, nor had it been in her knowledge that she had such destructive powers. Yet she bore the blame for his death inside her heart and her soul, scarring her in a way that both Logan and Remy knew.
When they reached the hotel, Rogue was quiet, looking around her as she felt the stares of others upon her. Remy wore his glasses and continued to hold her close, feeling apprehensive and self-conscious, hating the stares that were coming in their directions.
Getting two separate bedrooms wasn’t hard seeing as the owner of the hotel gave them both honeymoon suites. What was hard, was finding a way to comfort the broken girl that lay next to Remy.
She hadn’t eaten for two days and her face looked pale. He had just helped her with a bath, having worn gloves to gently clean her skin and hair. Putting her in a robe, he gently laid her down in the bed to rest. She fell asleep instantly.
Logan and Ororo slept in the next room, whispering to one another about the younger girl’s condition.
“Darlin’, I know how Marie is. She…she’s a strong girl, and just as pig-headed. But so is that boy in there. If anyone can get her out of this rut of hers, it’s him.”
Ororo simply lay in silence for a few minutes at that answer. “Perhaps you are right,” she said softly turning to face him, cupping his face in her hands. “But it’s still so hard on her. And it’s hard on my brother. I can see the pain in his face. Her emotions are seeping into him and he can’t comfort her without her permission,” she said.
Logan nodded. He knew how much Remy cared for her and that he’d even use his powers to help her if he could, even to the extent of nearly killing himself from the use of it. That was just the type of man that Logan had come to respect in him.
Back in Remy and Rogue’s room, he lay next to her, stroking her hair with gloved fingers. Her emotions came off of her in waves. Guilt, shame, fear, sadness and extreme self-hate. She stopped crying, but she stopped talking as well.
“Chere, I’ll go get you a drink okay?” he said as he walked next door. He grabbed a cup and began to talk to Logan. In the meantime, Ororo snuck over.
Seeing her laying on the bed all depressed touched her heart. Walking over to her, Ororo kisses the girl’s face and grabs her hands, forgetting of the girl’s powers and faints.
Marie screams and both men come running. They see ‘Ro on the ground, still alive, and Rogue sobbing. With that, the winds pick up and the rain comes down.
