Raven

"You have to tell me if they're alive," I said. Charles looked at me a moment before putting on the smooth metal helmet.

"I'll try."

I waited. I stood there, still as a statue, watching Charles search for Vic and Mort. I hated coming to him for help. It made me feel weak and stupid, like a failure. I kept telling myself that I had nowhere else to turn. Erik was incarcerated. I had no way of getting to him. Charles was my last resource.

"I can only find one of them," he said. "Victor Creed. He's up in Canada, just outside of Toronto."

"What about Mortimer?" I asked, forcing my panic aside.

"He's either dead or unconscious," said Charles, removing the Cerebro helmet. "I'm sorry."

"Thank you," I said hollowly, before transforming myself into one of his students and leaving the way I'd come. I slipped unnoticed past Scott, Ororo, and Jean. I watched them for a moment. They were laughing about something. I turned away, envious of their happiness, their sense of closure, the fact that they were all together. They weren't separated, lost, searching for one another. I left the grounds quickly, without attracting any attention.

I would have to be the one to tell Victor that his lover was dead. I felt queasy and depressed and heavy. Just...heavy. Like I was overflowing with bad news. Mort meant the world to Victor; you could tell just by the way he looked at him, he loved him more than anything. And I had to be the one to tell him that Mort was gone. I swallowed and picked my head up. I couldn't break down now. I had to stay strong. I almost laugheVictVictor had always been the strong, stoic one. Never crying, never showing any sort of real emotion, except with Mort, and that was behind closed doors. Now I would have to be strong for him.

I made my way back to the compound, or what was left of it. Stryker had found it, so it had been ransacked and practically torn apart. I was able to get a hold of enough money to take me to Toronto, though, and I transformed into a teenage girl before leaving. I couldn't bring myself to look at Mort's room. Victor would probably want to keep most of his things, little reminders of someone he'd lost. I bit back tears as I reached the bustiontion.
