Monday
sucked for a whole new reason after my weekend with Jubilee.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Prom was a h awh away and it seemed
reasonable, smart, relatively feminist females had lost their bleeding
minds. Even Jean, who less than a week
before had been on my side, deing ing prom to be nothing more than an excuse to
demean female ideals by forcing them to submit to…aw, Hell I forget.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> But she had a good argument and I was glad
she was on my side.spanspan>But Scott asked her
to go with him sometime between dinner on Sunday and breakfast on Monday so I
was alone in my anti-prom camp. Monday
broughth ith it hoards of girls fawning over those damned magazines and
giggling about plans, including Jubilee.
She barely spoke to me all day, even when we were assigned the same
group in English. Instead of discussing
Bronte, she and the other two girls in the group discussed corsages and
strapless bras, leaving me and Brian James to answer the damned questions.style="mso-spacerun: yes">
oughought we’d have a chance to talk at
lunch, maybe get some time to figure things out together, but she latched onto
Bobby and didn’t let go.

“Trouble in
Paradise?”

Kurt was
one of the few who weren’t treating us like we were fragile or something.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Yeah, he was shocked at first but the Elf
came through for us. He didn’t tip toe
around us or make oblique comments. “Prom,” I replied shortly.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I was angry, yeah, but becabecause she was
hanging on Bobby. Because she was
acting so…twitty.

Kurt sat
down across from me at the picnic table and sighed.yes"> “Kitty’s knee deep in magazines with Amara and Jean in the girl’s
bathroom at the moment.”

“Sorry.”

I will
never understand how he can actually eat that much, that fast.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> No matter how many lectures on metabolism
Beast gives us. “It’s not so bad.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> It’s kind of cute, really.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Reminds me how lucky I am that all I have to
do is find a suit.”

“One that
you can cutail ail hole in,” I reminded him.

“Well,” he
chewed a huge mouthful of pizza and swallowed before replying, “I look at it
this way. I could not care less about
the dance, the limo, the party or whatever.
I’m just going because Kitty is looking forward to it and frankly, I want
to see her in her dress.”

“That’s
hardly a good reason.”

“Ah,” he
smiled, coming over all dreamy, “you haven’t seen Kitty’s dress.”

Kurt’s
reasoning notwithstanding, I was still against going to the prom.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> By seventh period, everyone in the school
knew Jubilee and Bobby were going to the dance together.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> I caught her looking at me once, during
biology, and I swear she looked upset but when she saw me turned towards her,
she giggled at something her lab partner said and turned her back to me.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> That tore it. As soon as the bell rang, I grd myd my stuff and made a beeline
for my locker. If I hurried, I could
catch her before she went to gymnastics practice. “Rahne…” I swear I nearly
jumped out of my skin to hear her so close to my ear.

“So you’re
talking to me now?”

“Don’t,”
she whispered, sounding like she was about to cry. “You don’t understand.”

“Sure I
do. You’re pissed because I don’t want
to go to some damned dance and out meself in front of God and everybody.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Look,” I slammed the metal door and barely
missed catching her fingers in it, “I’m glad you’re so comfortable as to want
to come out an’ be public, but…What’s this?”
She had shoved a folded piece of paper at me and was holding it against
my breastbone, pushing hard enough to leave a mark. “You can just tell me you
know.”

“This isn’t
from me. Someone left it in my
locker. I found it before first
period.”

“What is
it?”

“Why don’t
you read it?” she snapped. She rocked
back on her heels and ran her fingers through her bangs, looking irritated as
all Hell.

I almost just stuck the note in my
pocket, just to be as bitchy to her as she was to me, but she looked so
upset… “Okay then.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Aren’t you going to be late for practice?”style="mso-spacerun: yes">

“I’m skipping. Read the damned
note.”

I expected something stupid, maybe
from Kitty asking her to go shopping for shoes after school or even one of the
girls on the team with her, trying to hook her up with one of their brothers or
friends or something. Instead, what I
read made me sick. I had never gotten ill
off of just reading something before, but this… The first words were I know,
written in big purple letters, like with a magic marker. The rest was some kind
of rant, full of cursing and accusations and threats. All coming down to her being gay. “Jubes…who?”

“I don’t know,” she practically sobbed.style=-spa-spacerun: yes"> She was trying not to cry, I could see it
now that she was so close to me. “They
didn’t give you a note?”

“Nothing,” I swore.

“They threatened to tell the coach,
to tell Principal Kelly…to…to..”

“I read,” I sighed.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> “Jubilee, do you think it’s someone from
home?”

“No offense, Rahne, but why would
they target just me? Bobby and St John
are sort of together, everyone there knows about us…” She looked like she wanted to scream and I felt horrible for all
the mean things I’d thought all day. “I
didn’t want to make things worse so I just shut up and latched onto Bobby.”

“We need to tell someone, Jubilee…Professor
Xavier maybe?”

“Maybe,” she allowed.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> “I’m sorry I tried to twist your arm into
coming.”

“No, don’t be,” I said before I
could stop myself. “I still don’t want
to go but I didn’t want you to be miserable like this…”

“Do you think maybe Evan is playing
a bad joke?”

“Even he’s not this stupid.”style="mso-spacerun: yes"> The hall was almost empty so I took the
chance and put my arm around her waist.
I expected some outcry or something but no one even noticed.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Girls doing this weren’t so obvious, I
guess. “Let’s go home, okay?style="mso-spacerun: yes"> We’ll talk to Professor Xavier and then you
I caI can have a talk.”

“Can I have a hug?style="mso-spacerun: yes"> Maybe a kiss?” she asked sadly.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> “I feel bad for treating you like this
today.”

“Come on,” I sighed.style="mso-spacerun: yes"> style="mso-spacerun: yes"> And get a kiss.”

A/N There’ll be some sex in the
next chapter so be forewarned.
