Part II-Stryker’s Academy of Higher Learning (Scott’s POV)
“I can remember fighting with the guards at Mount Haven, the high-security prison where Magneto was being housed, and I can remember hitting Lady Deathstrike with a beam that would have killed anyone else, except you of course. I heard her spine break when it hit the wall, and I knew that she was down for the count, so I ignored her and fought the guards instead. If I had known what she was, or what Stryker was up to I swear I would have done things differently.”
“Of course you would have Scott. We all have regrets.” Logan reassured.
I smiled appreciatively at Logan wondering when it was that he had become so supportive of me and the others. The old Logan had been abrasive, self-centered, and uncaring. Something had happened to him to change him, and I had been too busy with my grief and shame to even acknowledge the fact. “When she got up and headed towards me smiling, I knew the Professor and I were in serious trouble. I realized at that moment that you and she had been treated to the same mutilation and pain, and a part of me felt sorry for her, until she kicked me in the face.”
“I’ve found myself wanting to do that to you as well at times.” Logan joked.
I couldn’t help but to smile at his attempt in humor. “Well, she did a real job on me. You would have been proud…Anyway, the sleeping dart was taking affect, and my ego was slightly bruised with her assault, and I found myself slipping into darkness with only one thing on my mind, and it wasn’t Jean.”
Logan arched his eyebrow in surprise. “Me?”
“I’m sorry, but no it wasn’t you either. It was the sound of the Professor screaming my name. I couldn’t help but to feel that I had let him down. He raised me Logan. He gave me this life and my role in the X-Men. He trusted me to protect him and to carry on his beliefs, and here I was wounded and helpless like an animal in a cage.”
“Scott. You can’t blame yourself. Even the Professor didn’t see it coming. He was taken by surprise as well, remember?”
“Logan, it doesn’t matter that he didn’t recognize the warning signs. I, on the other hand, was trained to recognize danger. I failed to do my job, which caused the Professor to go through that horrible anguish with Stryker’s son, and ultimately it caused Jean’s death.”
Hesitantly, Logan asked, “What did it cost you Scott?”
Scott looked iLogaLogan’s eyes searching for what he didn’t know. “I don’t know, maybe everything.”
“The first thing I realized when I woke up was that my goggles had been tied to my head with a blindfold or some other material. I couldn’t see a thing, but I didn’t panic because I’ve been trained to deal with blindness. On the other hand, I wasn’t so comfortable with the fact that I was in a chair, andt myt my both my feet and wrists were bounded securely to the piece of furniture. I took in upleuple of deep breaths trying to calm myself, and I immediately began searching for a means to escape. The chair was bolted to the floor, and I couldn’t hear any noises that would have indicated an escape route. It didn’t take long for me to realize that I was completely alone in the room, and that the Professor was nowhere to be found. What really caused me the most concern was the fact that I couldn’t hear the Professor in my head.”
“Yeah, I’ve noticed that he has a way of pop int into my head without asking all the time. It used to bother me, but now I welcome it, except when I don’t want his advice.” Logan added.
“He tends to hang around in my head all the time, so did Jean. I’ve had a hard time adjusting to not having her in there all the time, and the fact that I didn’t have either one of them with me at Alkali Lake made it that much more difficult.”
“I sat there forever it seemed replaying the disastrous events that took place at Mount Haven. The fear for the Professos ovs overpowering, and I worried about Jean and Storm, but I didn’t worry about you or InstInstitute. I knew you would be okay…”
“Sorry to bust your bubble Slim. I screwed up myself. Of course, I wasn’t exactly expecting a Commando Force to come slamming through the windows.”
“Logan, you did great. You saved all of them.”
“No. I hav have sasomesome of them, but the one’s who were captured could have been killed, and I will never forgive myself for that.”
“Logan, don’t take this the wrong way, but when did you become so caring?”
Logan smiled and grabbed Scott’s h “Si “Since I fell in love with you.”
Scott yanked his hand back from the firm grip, “well maybe this story will cure you of that.” He stared off at the wall wishing that he could just disappear from this reality, but he knew it wasn’t possible. He would have to face the past if were to have a future.
“Like I said, I sat there for awhile wondering about the safety of others; never once worrying about my own. I had assumed that Stryker wanted the Professor, and that he was using me as collateral for the Professor’s cooperation. I knew that I might die, but I never once thought that I would be made to suffer like I did, or that I would be used to kill my friends.”
“You didn’t kill anyone Scott! How many times do I have to say that to you?”
“Until I believe it.”
He ignored Logan’s flaring nostrils and continued the story instead. “I heard the door open, and I could tell that it was a steel door based on the sound. I heard a safety of a gun being freed. I could tell by the distinct click that it was an automatic weapon, probably military-issued. I then suspected that we were in some sort of military complex. My outlook for escape looked even bleaker.”
“Welcome back to the living Mr. Summers. I was worried that my assistant had damaged you permanently. I’m glad to see that my concerns were unjust.”
“Where’s the Professor?”
“He’s doing fine Scott. Why don’t we talk about you for right now?”
“Where is he?”
“I said that he was fine! Now, why don’t you tell me about those powers of yours?”
“What about them? You obviously already know everything there is to know about me, or you wouldn’t have sent your assistant after me. Did you make her? Did you make Logan?”
“Curious boy aren’t you. Let’s just say that I like playing God. Now, how powerful are those beams of yours?”
“Why don’t you take my goggles off and find out.”
I heard him laughing at my comment and wished that I was anywhere but here. This man had done inhumane things to you and his assistant, and I realized that he could do similar things to me.
“I see. So if I took your goggles off would you be able to kill me?”
I sighed in aggravation. “Yeswoulwould be able to blow a hole in just about anything if I kept my eyes opened long enough.”
“Really? Anything?”
I swallowed hard in dread realizing that this man wanted something from me that I wasn’t willing to deliver. “In theory.”
“Maybe, but you couldn’t kill Lady Deathstrike now could you?”
I had to think for a second before I realized that Lady Deathstrike was his assistant. “No, but I did break her back on low setting. I could try it without the goggles if you’d like. I’m sure girls like her are a dime a dozen around these parts.”
“You’re being sarcastic again Scott. Were you always like this or is this a Wolverine influence?”
I decided to ignore the comment and focus on the sounds around me. I could here feet shuffling on the concrete floor. Definitely a military complex I thought.
“Is Wolverine a touchy subject Scott? Could you blow a hole through him if you tried?”
“I don’t know! Why are you asking me these stupid questions? I’m not going to answer you anymore until I see the Professor.”
A hand grabbed my chin roughly and squeezed it hard. “Listen to me boy. I’m the one calling the shots around here. You will not see the Professor until I say so. As a matter of fact, you’re not going to see anything until I break you.”
“Break me? What the fuck are you talking about?”
“Now, is that anyway for the leader of the X-Men to be talking? You’re supposed to be the role model for all of those children at the Xavier Institute.”
Everything clicked into place. The bastard had gotten the Professor and me away from the Institute, along with Jean and Storm, so that he could attack the children. “You better not hurt any of them or I’ll…”
“You’ll what Summers? Smart off to me? Bore me to death?”
“What do you want with them?”
“You’ll soon find out, but right now I would be more worried about what I want with you. After all, I could have easily had you killed back at Mount Haven if I wanted to see you dead.”
“Fine. Why don’t you explain what you want with me and the Professor?”
“I got a better idea Summers. Why don’t I show you instead?”
I heard the distinct sound of metal being unsheathed, and my neck was grabbed roughly by what I assumed was a soldier. I struggled to pull away from the hand, but he had a firm grip, and he had no intentions of letting go.
“Hold him tight Lyman. I would hate to miss and scar his lovely face instead.”
That got me to stay still instantly. My vanity was one of my many weaknesses, and the idea of being tied down, blindfolded, and scarred was just too much for me to handle. I felt the burning instantly. It was like acid being poured on my neck in full strength. I could smell my flesh burning, and I felt a wave of nausea coming on. I held in my grunts of pain not wanting to give this man the satisfaction of seeing me in pain. I felt like I was being invaded by an alien organism. I could feel the substance snaking its way through my system. My hearing was becoming less acute and my mind was becoming numb. I felt as though I wasn’t in control anymore of my thoughts or actions.
Before I lost control completely, I managed to ask one final question. “You never did tell me your name. Will you now?”
“Scott, my name is William Stryker, but for now on, you can call me Master.”
