Chapter Eighteen

* Note: I am about to take some serious literary license here. For those of you who are true X-Men Comic or Cartoon fans, I apologize up front. I’m trying to introduce an element of the comic-verse into the movie-verse and must be more than a tad creative with certain events. I’m trying to stick to having the correct characters involved and keeping events as close as I can to what actually happened in the story, but I can’t do that without having Rogue/Marie switch over to the bad guys, so this is MY spin on what happened with Carol Danvers/Ms. Marvel. Once again, for those die hard, true to the story folks out there, I apologize!!!!!
To those of you who have been leaving me such wonderful feedback, thank you so very much! I'm more than a tad insecure about my writing and I find it very encouraging when you say such nice things (it does tend to inspire fiendish fits of writing, so please, if you like this, let me know! This is still a work in progress and I am up to about twenty two chapters, but I have to go back and tweak things before I'm willing to post them, so bear with me! I'm working on it as fast as I can!
Thanks again!

“Are you sure?” She whispered. “I can’t believe she would come here!”

“I’d know that scent anywhere, Darlin’, it’s her and she ain’t alone.” He searched the darkness methodically, looking for any sign of movement, inhaling deeply trying to pinpoint her scent. If he’d been alone he would have charged headlong into the trees and caught that blue-skinned bitch without thinking twice about it, but he wasn’t going to leave his Marie to be caught alone by that psychopath.

He sent out a silent thought to Chuck, hoping that he would hear him. ~We’ve got company, Chuck, I smell Mystique on the grounds with another mutant that I can’t identify.~

~I hear you, Logan. I’ll send help. Be careful.~ Charles Xavier’s response was almost immediate. It was comforting to know that at least they weren’t facing whatever this pending danger was completely alone, but damned if it wasn‘t a little creepy knowing that Chuck always seemed to be listening. Thank God he‘d paid attention when Chuck had insisted on teaching them all how to send out a mental call for help.

“Chuck’s sending help.” He whispered on a breath against her ear.

They both tensed as they heard a twig snap not far from them.

“Well, well, if it isn’t Wolverine.” They both heard Mystique’s unique sounding tones chuckle from just a few feet away, the almost artificial quality of her voice sent shivers up Marie‘s spine as she tightened her grip on Logan‘s arm. “Just the man I was looking for.”

“What are you doing here, you blue-skinned hag?” He snarled. “You ain’t welcome here.”

“I’d never go anywhere if I waited to be welcome, Wolvie. Sometimes a girl just has to invite herself to the party or she‘ll never get any action.” She chuckled as she stepped into the dim light, her hips swaying with her usual seductively confident air, her metamorphic skin glistening in the darkness.

“That don’t answer my question.” He growled, pushing Marie gently behind him and unsheathing his claws.

“Tsk, tsk… have you forgotten that I owe you one? You left me for dead at Liberty Island and I haven’t forgotten that. I’ve searched long and hard for the means for my revenge and I finally found it.” The synthesized sound of her laughter sent chills up Marie’s spine.

“Get it over with, bitch.” He growled menacingly. “You don’t scare me one damned bit.”

“Have you met my friend, Wolverine? Her name is Carol Danvers, but she goes by Ms. Marvel. You see, she has the means to kill you being stronger than you and impervious to injury, but she needed a bit of convincing. It took a bit of doing, but my friends and I finally managed to convince her that you were the worst mutant of all and that the world needed to be rid of you.”

“Can’t take care of your own markers, Mystique?” He grinned as he moved away from Marie, drawing Mystique attention with him, “I thought better of you, but I guess I overestimated you. I shouldn‘t be surprised.”

“Well, you know how I love a good fight, but… a smart girl knows when she’s outmatched physically and turns to other means to accomplish her goals. You know what I mean. It‘s called delegating.” Mystique turned to call over her shoulder. “Now, Carol.”

A blonde atomic bomb seemed to land squarely on Logan’s chest with the force of a freight train knocking the air from his lungs with a groan. It was a woman and she was flying and dammit, she was as strong as an ox.

“Don’t make me hurt you, Lady!” He growled as he swiped at her with the adamantium blades that snicked so easily from his knuckles. It didn’t phase her at all. He pounded the blades against her repeatedly and they just seemed to bounce right off of her. “Dammit!”

“She doesn’t hear you, Wolverine, so arguing with her will do you little good. She does what I tell her and nothing more.”

“Mind control.” Marie whispered from the side lines as it suddenly occurred to her that the Brotherhood had dabbled in such tactics in the past. There was no reasoning with someone who had completely lost their ability for independent thought. She removed her gloves and watched intently for an opening, knowing that using her power on this woman was the only thing that was going to slow her down long enough for help to arrive and to keep her from killing Logan. There was no way in hell that she was going to loose that man now that she finally had him!

Mentally she opened the door to her powers as wide as she could and rose to her feet, preparing to use the power that she more often than not preferred to suppress as much as she could if not totally. She hated the thought of hurting anyone, with the exception of Magneto. Him, she’d happily kill, but this woman was only doing what she was being made to.

“Mystique, you are one sick bitch!” She snarled angrily as she watched Logan struggle with the woman.

Logan threw the petite blonde off of him with an effort that few could have made with any success and leapt to his feet preparing for another attack. She wasn’t going to be an easy one to take out. She was far stronger than he was and he suspected that she had more powers than just strength and flight. He felt like he had little creepy crawlies wiggling all over him whenever she touched him, like energy was surging through him. He had the sneaking feeling that she could just zap the shit out of him whenever she wanted to and pretty much turn him into Logan ka-bobs.

When she plowed into him again another smaller weight struck both of them, barely noticeable in the struggle between him and the blonde, but he knew that weight instantly. Marie had jumped onto the woman’s back and grasped her around the neck, her bare hands clinging with everything she had to the stronger woman’s skin, wrapping her legs around the woman‘s waist as she held on for dear life.

To my anonymous reviewer: You are absolutely right about the ribs thing, so I've removed it. I completely spaced over his ribs being just as durable as the rest of him. Thanks for pointing it out!
