Chapter Sixteen
She found the library primarily dark, only a reading lamp had been left lit on one of the long conference tables toward the back of the cavernous room. Logan was stretched out in front of the long cold fireplace, his feet propped up on an ottoman, his arms tucked protectively around his waist and he was slumped deeply into the rich leather of the arm chair. He looked so damned peaceful that she was loathe to wake him, but she desperately wanted him in bed with her rather than sleeping in this massively cold room.
She stopped a safe distance from him and prodded his foot, “Logan, sugah, wake up.”
“Wha…?” He mumbled blearily as he squinted up at her. “Marie?”
“Yeah, darlin. You gave me quite a scare when I woke up without you. You’ve been down here sleeping for ages.”
Logan sat up and slowly took in his surroundings. “The library? Good God. I fell asleep in here?”
“Yup, some time this morning, I guess. I went back to my bedroom and nearly collapsed in bed, thinking you would join me before long, but you never showed up. I had to wake the Professor to find you.”
“What time is it?” He frowned.
“Nearly eleven. It’s time to go bed.” She laughed. “Sorry, but it’s kinda funny waking you up so you can go to bed.”
“I’m starving, darlin’.” He groaned sleepily as he sat up. “Care for a midnight snack?”
“Sure, we can find you something. I’m not really hungry, but I’ll join you. There are bound to be dinner leftovers in the fridge.”
He rose from the chair and wrapped an arm around her neck. “Lead the way, babe. “
Marie grinned as she led Logan to the kitchen and found leftover ham and made a gigantic sandwich for him. She couldn’t help smiling as she sat across from him and watched him eat, feeling blissfully content. She suddenly felt very domestic and began to question, in her mind, just how far she would go to preserve this sense of peace that she felt with Logan. Could she sacrifice a child, knowing that the child was safe and protected? Truthfully though, a mutation wouldn’t be an issue with either of them. It would be expected in a child of two mutants and they certainly couldn’t hold something against their child that they had given him or her.
She wasn’t sure. To think that she would be capable of such a thing wasn’t something that she wanted to even consider.
“What’s wrong?” Logan asked as he pushed his plate to one side. “You look like you’re about to kick yourself in the ass.”
“The Professor said something to me about my Mother tonight and I’m afraid he may be right, but I’m having a hard time with it.” She admitted a bit sadly, thinking of the look on her Mother’s face when she had spoken so bluntly to her.
“What did he say to you?” He frowned.
“That maybe I’d been a bit harsh with her, that maybe she deserved a second chance. He said that she loved my Father and felt like she had to make a choice to keep the peace with him and asked me to put myself in the same place if it were you that I was forced to keep the peace with.”
“Well, isn’t this cozy?” Jean Grey commented a more than a bit snidely from the doorway.
Logan cast her an irritated glance. “Charming. Your timing sucks, Red.”
“Sorry to interrupt.” She shrugged with just a touch of sarcasm, making it perfectly clear that she was anything but.
Logan rose from the table and emptied the contents of his plate into the garbage before placing the plate in the dishwasher. “Come on, Darlin’, let’s go to bed.”
Marie rose from the table and exited the room ahead of Logan, just wanting to avoid a confrontation with Jean. The older woman had never liked her, which Marie failed to understand to this day. Consciously she knew that it was jealousy of her relationship with Logan. She knew that, but it had never sat well with her. She hadn’t treated Jean with anything but respect from the moment she’d arrived at the school, but Jean had taken a dislike to her after the stabbing incident just before Magneto had kidnapped her.
Marie suspected that it had something to do with Logan having once had an interest in her, an interested that had waned over the years; an attraction that she suspected Jean herself had killed with her sarcasm and her derisive attitude toward the majority of the students, to herself in particular.
Jean, she suspected, was extremely insecure and craved being the center of attention as a results of that, therefore Logan’s complete lack of attentions didn’t sit well with her.
“Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” Jean sniggered derisively as they left the kitchen.
Marie stopped in her tracks and turned to face the older woman, her temper boiling.
“Marie, don’t.” Logan pleaded quietly, nudging her toward the door.
She cast him a warning glance and leaned around him. “What exactly is it that makes you think that either of us would WANT to do anything you would do, Jean? And excuse me, but must you really be such a bitch all of the time? I know Logan isn’t panting after you anymore, but really, that‘s just something that you‘re going to have to get over. You‘re just going to have to deal with not being the center of his attention anymore, that‘s my job now.”
She stopped a safe distance from him and prodded his foot, “Logan, sugah, wake up.”
