“What’s going on here?” Logan demanded, rounding the corner at a quick stride. “I heard crying…” He came to an abrupt halt as he saw Rahne and Kitty huddled on the floor, Kitty dressed as if she were going to a funeral and Rahne was sobbing into her shoulder. “Half Pint?”
Kitty sighed and looked up at Logan, her ponytail slightly askew and her own eyes a little red from sympathy tears. “Rahne can explain it better, but basically,” Kitty made a face that bespoke great agitation and confusion, “things suck.”
“Putting it mildly,” Rahne sniffed furiously, pulling away from Kitty to peer blearily up at Logan. “Can I call home?”
It took Logan a few seconds to realize that she meant Scotland. “Kid, it’s after midnight there. Don’t you want to wait till in the morning?” He did not add that he thought she was at odds with her biological family, feeling that it would only start a fresh torrent of very un-Rahne-like tears.
Rahne rose to her feet and jerked her chin defiantly. “I know. My father will be awake. He always is at this hour…” It hurt her to remember that, she found, but she did not let the twinge of pain worm it’s way into her forebrain. “I’ll do chores to pay it off,” she offered nearly desperately, chagrined to hear the longing in her voice.
Logan nodded curtly and she was gone, fairly sprinting to the hall phone room and slamming the door behind her. “Start talkin’, Half Pint.”
Kitty rose and smoothed her skirt over her knees, shaking her head sadly. “Rahne got some letter from home and it said her priest was filing to have her excommunicated.” She closed her eyes for a moment, a headache pending behind her lids. “She doesn’t know why and I can’t help her… I have no idea about these things. Kurt would know, but he’s wandered off somewhere and…” She sighed again. “Logan, what do I do?”
He stood for a moment, unsure, before stepping forward and hugging her hard, nearly lifting her off the ground. “he’s your father, Kitty. Even after all of this, there was a time when he loved you and you loved him. You need to go because if you don’t, and the worst happens, you’ll always kick yourself because you might have missed your one chance to say goodbye and your one chance to get resolution.” He let up a bit on his hold and Kitty inhaled in what she hoped was a surreptitious manner, but Logan still knew she had been waiting to gasp for air. “Sorry, Half Pint.”
“No, it’s fine,” she breathed, trying not to seem ungrateful for his affection. “I just can’t imagine ever seeing them again willingly, but here I am, packed up and ready as soon as SHE calls…” She shook her head again, leaning against her foster father with an air of dejection. “I don’t want to go. Logan, I’m worried I’m turning into some sort of monster…”
“Ah, you’ll never be a monster, Kit.” He stroked her ponytail paternally, patting her back.
“Logan, you don’t understand… when Storm told me…” She paused to suck in a deep breath and the words came out in a rush. “I didn’t care. I didn’t give a damn, period. If he were on fire, I wouldn’t cross the street to put him out!” The words were hysterical, rising in pitch as her face reddened. “He abandoned me… they both did! They stopped loving me, if they ever did at all…”
“Calm down,” Logan put in. “One crying woman a night is all I can handle!”
He looked so upset himself, more for her discomfort than his, and so uncertain and endearingly befuddled, that Kitty had to laugh through her impending sobs. “Don’t look so scared,” she ordered, choking on giggles and cries. “I won’t explode or turn into hamster or something!”
He sighed through his discomfit. “Kitty, Storm is gonna take you and Kurt to Chicago and stay with you in a hotel near the hoal. al. You don’t have to deal with anyone you’re related to by blood if you play your cards right. Just stick to visiting hours, let Kurt run interference in the waiting room, and you’ll be fine. And Kitty,” he paused, capturing her chin in his hand and making her look at him. “You’re not a monster. You’re only human.”
“Some days, less than others,” she murmured, gently pulling herself free. “Do you know where Kurt is?”
Logan shook his head, recognizing from her overbright tone that she had already shut off the part of her emotions dealing with the impending visit. “Last I heard, he and some of the others were all havin’ a hen party in the basement.” He shrugged. “Who knows with that bunch.”
Kitty rolled her eyes. “I don’t think I even want to know…” She hummed tunelessly and rocked back on her heels, no intention of going to find her boyfriend. “So… how’re things with you and Storm?”
Logan raised a brow. “None of your business.”
“Hey, you’re my dad… I gotta make sure she’s good enough for you!” She giggled genuinely, adding, “I want to make sure she’s not after you for your fortune!”
“It’s the hair,” he deadpanned. “Chicks dig the hair.”1
Kitty managed not to guffaw and emitted a slight, silvery giggle and blushed prettily. “Seriously, I’m glad you two are together… She’d made a good mom.”
Logan held up his hands in a warding gesture. “Hey, don’t jinx!” Feeling a shade uncomfortable himself, he nodded again and said, “I’ll see if I can scare up Kurt for you, Storm’s getting the Blackbird ready even as we speak. Meet her down in the hangar soon as you can and then you can get this over with.”
Kitty nodded in return and smiled tightly. “It can’t be that bad, right?”
I forget the issue, but Logan makes that comment to Rogue after “rescuing” her in a roadhouse.
