Chapter 14

Title: The Winter Of Our Discontent
Author: Lex
Feedback: Please !!
Pairing: Remy/ Logan
Rating: PG 13
Warnings: strong language
Summary: I found myself angry at the end of the comic Ultimate X-men
#41 when Logan is sent to "deal" with a young mutant boy whose powers
are inadvertently deadly to those around him and so I thought I
wouldcontinue the story as I felt it after I finished the book.
Disclaimer: Though I love the X-men they do not belong to me and the
only thing I gain from writing about them is the pleasure of their
company.
Author's notes: I guess kind of comic verse and AU. I warn you
though, I do not speak kindly of the mutant band in
this story.

Chapter 14

Logan woke to soft singing next to his ear. It was a sad, beautiful
song. At least it sounded beautiful, the words he could barely make
out, and he only knew it was not English.

"Hey kiddo." He whispered, wrapping himself around the young man in
his arms. Remy smiled at him, not stopping the singing and just held
him tightly.

Logan closed his eyes. Remy was still lost to him. He held the boy
tighter as the song continued. Bringing knees up, he attempted to
move the two of them to the bed. After a brief struggle with gravity
and added weight of his lover in his arms, he did manage to get them
onto the more comfortable bed.

He laid Remy back against the pillow and delicately brushed the hair
off the boy's face, stroking a thumb across Remy's cheek to remove a
single tear that had fallen. The singing stopped suddenly. Logan was
startled for a moment until he realized Remy had fallen asleep. He
looked lovingly at the young man and then curled up beside him,
holding him close and keeping his thoughts as light as possible. He
closed his eyes and joined his lover in sleep.

Logan woke later with a start. Looking about the room, he already
knew Remy was no longer beside him. In a panic, he jumped from the
bed and tore open the bathroom door…nothing. "Remy?!" He cried out
turning frantically about the room. Trying to calm himself but losing
control, Logan grabbed a pair of jeans and attempted to pull them on
as he moved out the door and down the hallway to the elevators. He
began to calm a little as he recognized Remy's scent. It was still
strong meaning that he had not been gone long.

He ran out of the elevator, knocking a few of the people waiting
aside as he moved through the lobby of the hotel. He stopped short
and held back a sob when he noticed Remy talking to the desk clerk.
Collecting himself, he moved slowly over to the boy who was reading
the papers the woman had given him. Remy jumped as a hand landed on
his shoulder.

"Logan! Dieu, y' scared me, cher." Remy moved to hug his lover. "Y'
ok? Y' look like de devil his self was chasing y'."

Logan held him tight and whispered "I woke up and you were gone. I
got worried."

Remy looked at him questioningly. "Worried? Why y' worried? I jus'
came to get directions to some places I t'ought we could see b'fore
we moved on."

Logan placed his hands on either side of Remy's face. "You don't
remember this morning?" He asked, brows drawn in concern.

Remy smiled. "Course I remember dis mornin' … don' t'ink I will eveh
forget it."

Logan smiled at the memory. "No, Rem. After that, when you were
singing."

Remy looked confused. "Don' remember singing. What was I singing?"

"Don't really know, kiddo. It didn't really make much sense. I
thought it was French at first, but then.. well, it didn't sound like
anything. It was gibberish. Had me thoroughly freaked out, Rem. I put
us to bed and when I woke up you were gone." Tears were beginning to
form in Logan's eyes.

Remy held his lover tightly. "I'm so sorry, Logan. I don' remember
dat at all. I didn't mean t' scare ya. When I woke up y' were
sleeping so peacefully. I t'ought I would see what dis place had t'
offer for sightseeing." He looked into the older man's eyes. " I
didn't mean t' worry y' cher. I jus' don't t'ink sometimes."

Logan held the boy close. "It's all right Rem. It isn't yer fault.
It's just this feeling I get when I don't see ya. I feel…empty,
alone. I can't really explain it to ya, it's just an hollow feeling."

Remy kissed the man and whispered. "Didn' y' hear me y' stubborn
Canadian? I ain't goin' nowhere…not wit' out you. Yr' my heart, my
soul. I can't go nowhere wit' out dem now can I?" He kissed the older
mutant again. "Let's go back to de room, cher. Dat way I can hol' y'
proper."

Scott was reading the e-mail from Gambit. "He got the papers. They
are at a post office in Minneapolis. He is mailing me the key." Scott
frowned.

"Mailing?" Ororo questioned. She and Jean were in the office with the
X-men leader.

"Yeah, the little shit. He mailed it so that they would have several
days to get out of town before we could go and pick up the files."

Ororo smiled at the thought of her brother thinking like that. "I
told you, Scott, they are not coming back. At least not in the
foreseeable future."

"Am I the only one who feels that this tantrum has gotten out of
hand!?" Scott was furious at the men's actions. "Leaving with no word
of returning. They left at a time when we need them close by and they
didn't have the decency to…"

"Decency!?" Ororo was on her feet, a thunderclap following her
outburst. "You are no one to talk of decency, Scott Summers. Not one
of us has that luxury. We all know what assignments were given to the
two of them. We all saw the despair and anger they tried to mask upon
their return. Shame on you and Xavier for their sadness, and shame on
us for ignoring it." Thunder sounded again accompanied by flashes of
lightening.

"Logan and Remy left because they needed to breathe. They needed to
get out from the dirt pile the X-men buried them under!" The weather
goddess moved to Scott and laid her finger against his chest. "Leave
them alone, Cyclops. Do not attempt to follow them. You will not
succeed. Moreover, if you try, know that I will be there throwing all
I have in your way!" She poked the stunned leader with her finger
after each word, an almost perfect imitation of Logan.

Ororo then stood tall, smoothed out her hair and clothes and walked
silently from the room, a brief nod to a smiling Jean Gray on her way
through the door.
