A/N Goddess Foxfeather, Queen of Mad Plotbunnies, BUSIEST WOMAN ALIVE ™, Prophetic Muse, Hamster Witch and Uberbeta… *sends energy for busy week * InterNutter, TC, Maxwell Pink and Dracena are loverly and wondermous for archiving/hosting. ProPhile: Working on it. Really. Morgan: You out there? Readers/Reviewers: Ugh. Today is icky. My printer burst into flames so I’m taking this as a sign I need to get off this machine and do something else, lol. Thanks for reading and reviewing as you can…
Kitty sat down beside Kurt and waited for him to acknowledge her. After a moment or two passed when he did not open his eyes, she cleared her throat. “Well?” she asked.
“I’m asleep,” he replied. “I’ll get back to you.” He could hear the papers in her hand rustling and he wished she had not brought them. He was very close to snapping at her about the entire thing but he just could not get the words to come out of his mouth. He feared hurting her and knowing that she would be gone after break, separated for a week or more… the idea made the notion of snapping less than appealing. _All we need is for bitter feelings to stew for a week… who knows what damage that will do? _
She sighed and set the sheaf of papers and the note book aside. “I haven’t seen you all morning. You weren’t at that meeting with Jamie. Where’ve you been?” She slid closer, pressing against his arm. “I missed you.”
Kurt opened one eye and looked at her. The gym was silent at this hour of the day. Without Logan around, there was no constant cycle of training and practicing. Scott had taken over teaching the younger students in the Danger Room but it was not the same. It lacked the urgency and realism of Logan’s training and focused more on what ifs and safety. Jubilee was scheduled to use the gym in an hour, Kurt knew, but for now, he had the place to himself. Well, he amended mentally, *they* had the room to *themselves*. “I had some things to take care of,” he sighed, slipping his arm around her shoulders. “I heard about Jamie, though. Unglaublich, huh?” He sighed again and kissed the top of her head. “I missed you, too.”
Kitty murmured wordlessly and stretched her feet, pointing her toes. “I have an entire week before I have to be back at school. I’ve been doing some thinking about it and I’d like…”
“Stop!” He said the word more sharply than he intended. He did not look at her as she leaned away and stared. “Just…stop.”
“Kurt?” she blinked rapidly, confused. “What did I say that pissed you off?”
He swallowed hard and opened his mouth to speak but the words just would not come. Under her intense scrutiny, he sighed and managed to tell the truth while not hurting her feelings. “I just don’t want to talk about school right now,” he sighed. “I don’t like thinking about it.” He smiled tentatively and pulled her close again.
Kitty frowned but leaned against him, shoving the papers away a bit, pushing them further down the bench. “I was thinking,” she continued quietly, her voice echoing off the high beams of the ceiling. “I was thinking maybe we should go do something today. You know, get out of the house. I just feel odd and think maybe getting out would be good for us.”
Kurt nodded. Emma had scared him, he admitted to himself. Seeing her crazed, rambling… Kitty did not know. Only he and Jamie had seen her before she was taken to the Professor. It was making a knot grow heavy and tight in his stomach, this withholding. He could feel it, this change coming over them. Not just him and Kitty but the entire Institute. It had been a long time since he had just been himself, since he had not had to worry about hiding or saying the right thing to the right person. “Ja,” he heard himself saying, “I think that would be a good idea…” He kissed her forehead then her lips, lingering a moment as she sighed into the kiss, her fingers trailing down his jaw to his neck. “What did you have in mind?” he asked, breaking the kiss enough to speak.
“Somewhere private,” she said, smiling. “Just us…” Her fingers skimmed down his neck to his chest, tracing down to his stomach and around to his back where she ran her nails very lightly across his lower back, making him shiver slightly. “Or the zoo.”
He snorted, the incongruity of the statements making him laugh. “The zoo? It’s freezing out! The animals won’t want to come out and show off, Katzchen…” He kissed the shell of her ear and smiled against her neck.
“The polar bears and penguins won’t mind,” she said. “But good point. Hmmm…. Somewhere warm, somewhere private…” She gasped as his fangs teased her flesh, nipping her neck sharply. “My room?”
“Mmm… you know how our luck is. I don’t want to tempt fate,” he murmured, kissing the spot he had bitten.
“Hotel?” she suggested randomly, not entirely serious.
“They want money for that,” Kurt pointed out, “and I refuse to let you spend school money for a hotel room.” He kissed her neck again.
The gym door burst open and Rogue was there, her eyes wide and wild, obviously shaking. “Kurt,” she began. “Kurt, Kurt, Kurt…” She could not make another word form. “Kurt!”
Kitty and Kurt both stood and came to her sides. “What is it?” Kitty asked, touching her friend carefully, not sure if she was safe or not. “Rogue, God! You’re shaking like a leaf!”
Kurt took her arms and guided her to the bench. “What is it, Rogue? Are you ill? Is someone hurt?” He shook her lightly. “Rogue?”
“Dead,” was all she could manage. “Dead!”
Kitty frowned and sat down, forcing Rogue to look at her. “Who is, Rogue? Is it… is it Logan?”
“No,” she replied, the tears finally coming. “Todd!”
