Chapter 14

Kitty cursed a blue streak the likes of which no one had witnessed before. She strung together new phrases in English and a few in Hebrew that were not only anatomically difficult, but also went against many rules of sexual ettiquette. She was such a fool. She pointed the car back toward the mansion and cursed herself and Kurt. She was angry at herself for reacting like an idiot when confronted with a familiar face. And why did Kurt have to be so damned frustrating when it came to sticking around for serious conversations. Was he really willing to give up everything they'd shared the past few days without a fight.

Kurt alternated teleporting and walking. He needed to cool off and the rapidly approaching snowstorm fit his purposes well. He could manage a two mile teleport at his limits, but he wasn't trying to go that far. He cursed himself for a fool. Why had he thought that Kitty would be any different from everyone else in the house. Sure, she'd been his best friend for years, but becoming romantically involved with the fuzzy blue guy was something she couldn't do, even around her fellow mutants. He knew she loved him. Hell, Amanda had loved him too, but it always came down to public appearances. He spotted a blinking bar sign before him. He could use a few beers right about now, and this pub didn't check IDs.

Kitty turned on the windshield wipers as snowbegan to fall in fat, heavy flakes. It was nearing midnight when she pulled through the gates onto the Xavier Institute grounds. She parked in the garage and re-hung the keys by the door. Not knowing who was awake and who was sleeping, she walked quietly through the house. When she passed the dark kitchen, a voice interrupted her.

"Did ya ditch the Elf?" Logan sat at the table, drinking a beer. As the only person besides herself and Kurt who knew anything about their relationship, Kitty was almost relieved to see him.
"Elf ditched me." She said, sadly. She pulled another chair out and sat across from the older man. "I screwed things up, Logan. Big time." She went on to tell him about the coffee shop and her knee-jeark reaction of pulling back from him in front of Bobby.
"Why'd you pull away?" Logan asked, sipping his beer. Kitty didn't have night vision as keen as the Wolverine, and she couldn't read his expression. "Thought you two were going for a real relationship thing."
"Don't know why it happened." Kitty said, miserably. "Maybe I was worried about being teased for dating someone so soon after my breakup with Lance. Maybe I wanted a little more time before the younger crowd followed us around, interrupting us all the time like we used to do to Jean and Scott." She shrugged. "Either way, I made a mistake and he's hurt. He didn't stick around to let me explain anything either." She leaned her forehead tiredly in her palm and sighed. Then she regarded the man across from her. "Sorry, didn't mean to make you a 'Dear Abby'." He chuckled in the dark at her.
"Can't say its a hat I've ever worn, before, Katherine Pryde. But in this case, I'll give you a little advice." He stood up and walked to the doorway. "Move fast, cause he just walked in." Logan vanished from sight and Kitty leapt to her feet, peeking out toward the front door where she saw Kurt come around the corner. He wasn't paying attention to where he was walking. He was almost on top of her when she spoke.
"Kurt." She said, softly. "I was a little worried." He glanced at her, his expression still unreadable.
"Shouldn't have been." He said. He was shivering slightly. She walked to him and automatically placed her hands on his face.
"Kurt, you're freezing." she said, feeling the cold that seemed to emanate from him where there was usually warmth. His breath stank of beer and his words were a little slurred.
"Care to warm me up, Katzchen?" He said, leaning forward. He clutched her close to him and planted a sloppy kiss in the vicinity of her mouth before releasing her so quickly she nearly fell. He walked past her and removed his coat, tossing it onto a hook in the hallway. Kitty did the same thing before following him down the hallway.
"Kurt, I know you're drunk, but we need to talk about tonight." She lay a hand on his arm to slow him down. He jerked it out of her grasp and continued to walk down the hall.
"Tired of talking, Kitty." His voce was harsh and his posture was stiff now. "Thought we were done with the talking thing and moving on to something else."
"We are, Kurt, will you just let me explain? Or at least face me and let me talk at you." She knew he didn't teleport well when he was intoxicated so she continued to badger him. "Fuzzy, I didn't mean to hurt you, I didn't mean to react so badly to seeing Bobby, but I wasn't prepared to answer any questions about us."
"What's there to answer?" He snapped, stopping near the doorway to the living room. He faced her and threw his hands into the air. "We were among friends and we've know each other for years. We were in a public place and you held my hand till somebody who knew us showed up."
"Can you try to see it from my point of view?" Kitty asked, catching one of his hands. "I didn't know how I felt-" He cut her off.
"You felt great when I was fucking you yesterday in your room! And the day before in the library, and the night before-" Kurt's head rocked back on his shoulders and his ears rang from the force of Kitty's palm connecting with his face. Of every blow she'd ever dealt him, this one was perhaps the most painful. He shook his head to clear it and looked at her, she'd re-opened the cut on his lip. A tiny trickle of blood started to seep out. She was trembling with rage. It was the first time she'd struck him in anger.
"I don't care how drunk you are or how angry you get at me." Her eyes blazed with fury. "You will never speak to me that way again."
