Chapter 13

Chapter 13

The real harassments began shortly after the first attack outside the supermarket. As said, the news about the mutant living in Bailey Falls spread like wildfire, and people appeared to be all but tolerant.

Logan got fired from his work, because his boss claimed he could accept no mutant employees, and dismissed Logan without saying more. Logan accepted the news without trying anything, and simply went home, now out of work. He never really did like his job at the steelworks, but it had at least been a job, and a secure source of money. Now all that was gone, simply because some people didn’t want to work with mutants.

Erik was allowed to continue his job, because no one actually knew he was a mutant yet, just a harmless little faggot, but he did a good job and BioTech didn’t want to give up a good employee.

They could have made it, if the harassments hadn’t started. Soon every resident of Bailey Falls knew where the mutant and his little faggot lived, and some took steps. Which meant harassment.

Logan and Erik were not left alone anymore. People did all kinds of thing to them, from throwing stones through their windows to setting their backyard on fire. One morning Logan discovered that someone had slashed the tires of his car. Logan didn’t drive much anngernger, but Erik used to drive to work every morning. Erik’s pitiful pay didn’t allow them to buy any new tires for a while, so that meant Erik had to find an alternate way to get to work.

Erik didn’t want to work for BioTech any longer, but he didn’t have much of a choice, since they needed money. Whenever he went out he was met by sneering faces and spiteful comments, sometimes from people who didn’t even know him. Calling him “faggot” or “mutie-lover” had become very popular, and Erik didn’t know what to say to his defence.

They had endured this shit for several months now, and Erik didn’t know how much longer he would be able to take it.

Logan felt the same. Every day it felt like he would either have a fit or collapse – he didn’t know which would be worse. He hated seeing Erik get harassed, since he knew Erik was sensitive and took this a lot harder than he did himself.

One evening when Erik had come home from work Logan decided it was time for a serious talk. There was only one way out of this hell, and he had started to consider it.

“Erik, I think we must move away,” Logan said gravely and awaited his lover’s response.

“Move?” Erik asked dubiously. “But Logan… this is our home. We can’t let them chase us out of our own home. Right? That would be like giving up.”

“No, Bailey Falls isn’t our home anymore. It was. We have nothing more to give this town. If we don’t move we will break. Or get killed. It will be best. We can’t just sit around here and wait for them to break us. We have to move away.”

Erik thought about how reluctant Logan had been to even *discuss* moving before, and it honestly surprised him to hear it from Logan now.

“That would be like saying they’ve won,” Erik tried. “We can’t let that happen.”

“Erik, now you listen to me,” Logan said sternly. “I won’t expose you to this any longer, or myself, for that matter. We’re gonna move some place where no one knows us, and where we can live in peace. We have to. Erik, you do realize this, don’t you?”

Erik nodded sadly. Of course. But leaving this house, where he had spent 33 years of his life… It was sad, but it had to be done. He realized it now.

“Where shall we move?” he asked quietly.

“I’ll find something nice. Far, far from here. I can promise you that, angel.”

Logan kneeled on the floor before Erik, and took his hands in his own, squeezing them encouragingly. Erik smiled weakly. He liked Logan’s way of still calling him “angel” after all these years. It was sometimes hard to believe that Logan still loved him so dearly now when he was 44, but he did, and nothing could make him stop loving Erik.

“You have to make sure to find us a nice home,” Erik said.

“Of course I will,” Logan said and kissed both of Erik’s hands. When he thought of moving away again, and realized they had no other choice, he couldn’t hold back his tears. Sobbing silently, he rested his head on Erik’s lap, spilling his tears on the fabric of his lover’s pants. Erik’s hand travelled softly through his hair, attempting to soothe him, and he could hear the younger man murmur words of consolation.

Erik had never seen Logan cry before, but it didn’t honestly surprise him. He knew what this house meant to Logan, and how terrible it would be for him to leave it. Erik felt the same way. This place had been his home for over 30 years, and now he would have to leave it only because some people were narrow-minded and intolerant.

“It’s alright,” he tried, pulling his slim fingers through Logan’s hair. “Don’t cry, Logan. We’ll find another home. It will be alright. Don’t be sad.”

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

They moved away in stealth six weeks later. Logan sold his house, and gained just enough money to buy a new one somewhere far away from Bailey Downs.

Erik had not yet seen r ner new home when they left their old one in July 1977, but Logan had told him that the house, located near the American border, close to Winnipeg, was much smaller than their old house, and much more secluded. The nearest society would be more than ten miles away.

Hopefully no one there would find out about their abnormal genes and find a reason to harass them.

Not much of their stuff could fit into the car and the rental trailer, so they had to leave many things behind. Erik only brought what he thought was necessary, and some things that meant a lot to him, like his books and certain gifts Logan had given him.

Logan didn’t cry again after the night he told Erik they had to move, but that didn’t lessen his grief. He had a dogged expression on his handsome face the day when they were finally leaving. It was clear that he had accepted the truth, and wasn’t going to shed any more tears.

They stood by the car for a while, regardineir eir old home, now emptied of all their possessions. It was but a shell of their true home now, looking sad and alone without its inhabitants.

Erik wondered what the man who bought the house would do. Probably tear it down and sell the land. A smart choice, perhaps. It didn’t matter. Not anymore.

“Get in the car now,” Logan finally said. “We’re going home.”

“I really don’t want to leave,” Erik said quietly. Tears had started rolling down his pale cheeks, and he didn’t even try to blink them away.

“Me neither…” Logan sighed. “But we have to. Come on now. Don’t make it more difficult than it already is.”

Erik silently obeyed, and apathetically stepped into the car. He had to realize the truth. Bailey Falls was not his home anymore. He would never see any of this again.

“Go,” he whispered hoarsely.

“You okay?” Logan asked gently.

“No, but go anyway. I’ll be alright.”

“Hey Erik… At least we have each other,” Logan said seriously and squeezed Erik’s ice-cold hand. “Remember that. It could be worse.”

After saying that Logan started the car and left Bailey Falls to never return.
