Kitty smiled prettily at the young intern who’s name, she found out, was Lee. “Thank you so much,” she said, leaning in close as if she were about to embrace him. “The department will be thrilled.”
“Look,” he said, glancing both ways down the empty corridor outside the noninvasive testing lab. “I know you’re not a nurse. And I know he’s no patient here or anywhere else…” His gaze settled on Todd for a moment and the odd, swooping dance he was doing around the water fountain. “Want to tell me what’s going on here?”
Kitty frowned slightly. Lee was holding the test results just out of her reach so she could not easily do a grab and go maneuver. With a sigh, she moved towards Todd, Lee following perforce. “Why do you think that?” she finally said, taking hold of Todd’s wrist with a delicate touch so as not to startle him. “Todd,” she said as an aside, “stop dancing with the water fountain. It’s not a prince in disguise.”
“The evil queen has ways of trapping a pure spirit in such monstrous things,” Todd stage-whispered, his eyes wide. “Once, she trapped a prince in the body of a beast!”
Lee raised a brow. “I’ve done rotations in psych and neuro. He’s not presenting as a psych patient…” He waved the packet of test results just out of Kitty’s reach. “Now do you want to tell me what’s going on or do you want to tell hospital security?”
“Do you honestly think I’d get in more trouble than you?” she asked archly. “You’re the one who used the equipment and put a non-patient’s life at risk.” She paused and edged closer, Todd in tow. “And you’re the one who’s going to have to explain *why* you did it.” She smiled again, this time wetting her lips slightly. _I have no idea how Amara can do this. Flirting sucks… _
Lee wavered. “What’s your real name?” he asked, his brows drawing together. “What’s his? Is he your boyfriend? Is he on something?”
Kitty sighed. She saw her chance and decided to go for it. “Sorry, Lee. Sometimes, life is going to be confusing.” With a deft grasp, she took the packet from his hand and, Todd’s wrist securely in her hand, she phased back through the wall and into the testing lab. “Come on!” she snapped at Todd. “We don’t have time to dawdle!” She could hear Lee fumbling at the door even then, working the complicated series of locks the old hospital still used in place of a more modern card entry system. She dragged Todd, who was protesting loudly, through the cramped lab. “Damn it,” she muttered, knowing full and well that from here on out, she would be responsible for likely a large amount of damage to the hospital. “Okay, Todd, we’re going to do something very…magical, okay?” She nodded, smiling brightly, trying to encourage him to do the same. “We’ll use magic to get out of the castle and back to our…um…coach…”
Todd stared at her, his eyes becoming muddled with confusion. “Kitty?” His voice was slow, creaking. It was as if he were just coming awake.
Kitty felt a cold chill of excitement run through her. “Todd? Oh, thank God!” She pulled him into a tight embrace. “Come on, let’s get out of here!”
Todd shook his head. “But the Prince…”
The door to the lab came open and Kitty groaned under her breath. “Fuck.” She glanced aside at Lee, weaving his way around the bulky lab equipment, and she muttered a quick prayer for forgiveness as she phased through the floor, Todd in tow.

Todd tripped after Kitty as she ran through the parking garage. “Are you kidnapping me?” he panted, the heavy trench coat over his lacey slip making him sweat heavily as he was pulled along down rows of asphalt and oil-stained parking slots. “I thought you were my faerie godmother!”

Kitty skidded to a halt near the Institute car she had borrowed, fumbling in her pocket for the keys. “Right now, I’m sort of pissed off,” she replied, out of breath herself. Behind them, she heard the door to the parking level slam and she knew she had just moments. “Come on, come on… Damn it!” she snarled at herself, shoving Todd through the car door without opening it before following, pushing him across to the passenger seat. After one more fumbling attempt, she found the correct key and started the car, slamming it into gear almost simultaneously, much to the protest of the transmission. She could not bring herself to look in the rearview mirror as she screeched out of the parking space and sped down the spiraling parking garage, heading for the exit. “Todd, reach into the glove compartment and get out the five dollar bill in there.”
“What?”
“Damn it damn it DAMN IT!” Kitty slammed on the breaks, skidding slightly as she did so, and reached for the glove box. “Here!” she said sharply, grabbing the money out. “I refuse to be a thief. More than once. Today,” she amended, hitting the accelerator again. She threw the five dollars at the garage attendant as they sped by, narrowing missing being hit by the wooden guard arm across the parking garage exit. “There goes my hopes of being a resident here,” she muttered. “I just hope they don’t know Jean.”
