Jamie jittered nervously, pacing back and forth along the length of the foyer. “Sorry,” he muttered in response to Rahne’s low growl of annoyance. “I’m just so anxious… I’ve never done this before…”
“What? Irritated your girlfriend? No, not on this level…” She stood, abandoning the lower step for a good stretch and yawn. “Look, Jamie, the guy from the observatory won’t be here for a while yet. You only just called him! Come on,” she added, holding out her hand invitingly, smiling just a little, “I’ll help you pass the time…” She raised a brow meaningfully, he smile broadening. “I’m quite good at that, you know…”
Jamie paused and chewed his lower lip gently. “I want to… God, I want to… but I’m sort of…um…” Here, his face turned so red Rahne feared for his blood pressure. “I can’t…”
“You…can’t?” Rahne blinked and sat back down on the second to last step. “You’re not even eighteen… you can’t be impotent now!” She was torn between frustration and concern, between wanting to tell him to snap out of it and asking if he wanted to go see Beast for advice. “I mean… is it broken1 or something?”
“No!” He shook his head vehemently, trying to not even consider the pain that would involve. “I’m just…you know, nervous. Too distracted!” He looked down at his feet sheepishly. “Sorry,” he muttered. “It’s not because of you or anything… I swear!”
Rahne had not even considered that idea, but now it was firmly planted in her mind. She stood again and folded her arms across her chest, unconsciously covering her small breasts. “Sure… Just some tiny dot of light that may or may not be a lump of rock is more exciting than I am. That’s fine.” She did not meet his eyes as she turned and bolted up the stairs, taking them two at a time.
Jamie winced as he heard her bedroom door slam shut. “Damn it,” he muttered, dropping to sit on the step she had abandoned.
“Nice,” Kurt opined from above, making Jamie jump. He dropped from the hanging lamp overhead and landed on his feet in front of Jamie. “Two words for you, mein Freund… Flowers. Lots.” He crunched into the apple in his hand and said, around a mouthful, “Just for future reference, girls don’t like it when you prefer science over their offer of lovemaking.”
Jamie groaned under his breath in embarrassed frustration. “I know, I know… what’re you doing up there anyway? It’s not nice to eavesdrop…” He was sulking and he knew it, but at that point he did not actually care. Picking idly at the frayed hem of his jeans, he added, “Rahne’s just mad because I sort of turned her down last night… I had just found the thing and she was being very…um…”
“Attentive?” Kurt asked, hopping up onto the banister and sitting carefully as possible. “And I was hiding from Kitty. I love her but she keeps trying to give me these books on writing college application essays! I’m tempted to tell her it’s against my religion…” He bit into the apple again and sighed. “But she’d probably point out all the Catholic colleges…”
Jamie snorted. “She’s really determined, huh? Why don’t you just tell her you don’t want to go and leave it at that?” He glanced up at Kurt and they both sighed. “ Right, never mind… I forgot for a second what Kitty’s like when she has an idea in her head…”
Kurt smiled, the tips of his fangs pressing against his lower lip. “She’s aggravating sometimes, but I love her.” He finished the apple and vanished briefly, returning sans apple core. “Now, about Rahne…”
“I’m kinda uncomfortable talking about that, Kurt,” Jamie responded quickly. “Sort of private, you know?” He was blushing again, this time the color spreading down the back of his neck and showing on his arms a bit.
“Ja, sure,” Kurt shrugged. “But just so you know… that happens to all guys sometime… it’s nothing to be ashamed of.” He cleared his throat, slightly embarrassed himself.
“You mean… you?” Jamie asked, glancing up quickly at the blue furred teenager.
“Hell no!”2 Kurt cleared his throat again and continued, “I just mean that it *can* happen and once you’re not so distracted, things should be normal… just don’t neglect Rahne’s feelings, ja? And not just about sex. It’s more than that…”
“What’s that supposed to mean?” Jamie challenged, piqued. He stood and was eye to eye with Kurt. “I’m VERY considerate about her feelings!”
Kurt was saved by the bell. The door chimes sounded before he had to answer. He smiled tightly at Jamie and vanished, reappearing at the door and turning his holo on. Opening it, he found himself face to face with Emma. She looked haggard, very worn and much older than her years. “Frau Frost!” he exclaimed, revert to being extra polite. “Are you ill?”
“That’s not polite to say such things,” she muttered. “It’s like asking a larger woman when the baby is due.” She pushed past Kurt and sighed as she stepped into the hallway. “Where is Charles? I could not contact him all night and this morning… I need to speak with him urgently.” At her words, Jamie took off at a trot for the back study. Emma turned to Kurt and studied his face intently. “Have they spoken to you? Have you seen them?”
“Uh… who?” Kurt backed away a few steps. Emma was not at home in her head, he thought. Her eyes were too dilated, her voice too stilted. “Emma, why don’t you sit down? Would you like some water?” He reached for her elbow only to have her jerk away violently.
“No!” she snapped. “I can’t sit down, I can’t sleep!” She started pacing, her heels clicking on the marble floor. “What about Jean? Or Jono? Have they spoken to them? Yes, they’d be more likely to speak to those two… Have they seen them?” Her words were slightly slurred as if she had not rested in days. Her gait wobbled and seemed broken as she walked to and fro in the front hall.
Kurt inhaled deeply, trying to find the words that might calm her. “Emma,” he said quietly, “let’s go sit down on the sofa and wait for the Professor. It’s more comfortable in there, ja?” He held out a hand to her and smiled kindly. “Come on…”
“No!” she spat, stopping in her tracks. “We have no time to just sit around! It’s already too late!”

1 I think I’ve mentioned it before but yes, you can actually break a penis. Not so much the penis itself but rather the ligaments and tearing the vascular tissues. Still painful, from what I can infer.
2 Stolen from Night Court when Mac and Harry were discussing Dan’s lack of performance ability. All the males replied with “Hell no!” when Dan asked if it had ever happened to them.
