"Damn it!”

The ground shook again as the female mutant, Silvie Marin, screamed in agony.

“We have to stop her,” Warren shouted over the screams, wings outstretched to keep from toppling over.

“Wait, we can‘t hurt her! We’re here to help, not injure her!” Scott yelled back, trying to keep his balance as the ground trembled and lurched beneath his feet.

Logan crouched down to steady himself, and glared at the cause of all this mess.

“She’s not going to stop unless one of us knocks her out,” he growled.

A near by tree cracked with a resounding snap, fell, almost landing on Silvie. The kneeling, dark haired girl stopped screaming so suddenly that the following silence was eerie.

Warren felt a slight chill creeping up his spine. A faint tingly feeling that he knew had nothing to do with the silence, but from the power coming from the girl. All three of them shared a look of unease, something was seriously wrong.

“Now wha-?” Logan’s words were cut off by a piercing scream and a blast of uncontrolled power that caused the world to go black and disappear.

Sylvie Marin was a young woman of 23 that lived in St. Louis.

She was a cop at the local police station and was a single mother of twins. She was also a mutant; though she had no idea of this, because her powers only came out under special circumstances.

It was an easy mission: Find and recruit the young mother and bring her back to the school.

Or so that’s what the Professor said.

Right. So then why was this “easy” mission causing my head to feel as if two tons of bricks had landed on it?

Groaning slightly under my breath, I rolled onto my side and opened my eyes slowly. Lifting my head slightly off the ground, I looked around for the others and saw that Logan had already gotten to his feet rather unsteadily. Scott was still waking up, but it seemed as if everyone was all right.

“Silvies gone,” Logan said groggily.

“What did she do to us?” Scott asked, getting to his feet slowly.

“I’m not sure she’d even know what she did,” I commented, deciding to get up because I was the only one still on the ground, and I didn’t want to look like a wuss.

“It did something to us. We were out for a while, its dark all ready,” Scott looked up through the trees. “Must have been out for more then five hours, it was early afternoon when we caught up with her.”

Logan sniffed the air cautiously. “I don’t smell her anywhere. Even if a whole day past, I should still be able to get a scent.”

He slowly stalked over to where Silvie had been kneeling and sniffed the area more cautiously. Scott and I walked up behind him.

“The fallen tree is gone,” I noticed suddenly.

“I still scent the power that was coming off of her, though very faintly,” Logan glanced at the both of us. “But her scent is completely gone. The leaves here are undisturbed, and as Warren pointed out, the tree that nearly crushed Silvie is gone.”

Scott frowned slightly, well-muscled arms crossed over his chest. Minutes passed while we waited for our leader to come up with a plan. I sat down again, not really caring if I looked like a wuss or not, my head hurt to damn much.

Logan went off to search the area, not going too far, as Scott ordered him.

I tried to get all the kinks out of my shoulders and wings from laying on them for so long in an uncomfortable position. The headache started to go away by the time Logan came back, in his normal clothes carrying a bag.

“Our jeep’s still here,” he said shortly, tossing me the bag. “All our stuff is still there. There was no sign of Silvies car either.”

“Have you thought of what we should do yet?” I asked Scott while looking through the bag and pulled out my clothes, the image inducer, and the harness for my wings.

“We can’t really do anything at the moment,” Scott sighed, his visor flashing red with irritation. “All we can do right now is go to a hotel and rest until tomorrow. We can search for Silvie then.”

“Wow, it took you this long to come up with that, Slim?” Logan said sarcastically.

“Logan, just leave him alone,” I said exasperated. I tossed the bag to Scott, and started the annoying process of getting changed. I always hated confining my wings in the harness, it was so uncomfortable. Unhappily I took off my red and white uniform and put the harness on with ease that only came from practice.

Next was my expensive black suit with a silk red tie, I glared at Logan. This was not something that you just stuffed into a bag! The image inducer was next. The Professor had given me this one just before I left. It was a plain silver necklace. The instant I put it on, my blue skin turned into a more normal skin tone, and the slight hump on my back caused by my hidden wings disappeared.

After Scott had finished dressing, he swung the bag now carrying our uniforms over a shoulder and led the way back down to the rented jeep.

At the hotel we ran into a problem. Several problems actually.

My card was declined. It said that the credit card number wasn’t right. After yelling at the clerk several times about the faulty register and having Scott calm me down, I paid for the two rooms in cash. I, of course, got one room to myself while Scott and Logan shared. Hey, I paid for it!

Another problem was that when I called my bank, the poor person on the other side of my wrath, shakily informed me that there was no one with the name Warren Worthington III listed in the bank system.

I slammed the phone down into the cradle and sat for a moment, staring off into space. That was a lot of money to just disappear all of a sudden.

Getting up from my seat on the large bed, I went and knocked on Scott and Logan’s door.

“We have a problem,” Scott greeted me when he opened the door.

“I know,” I said, coming in, “I just called my bank, and they said my name wasn’t in their system.”

“We have a bigger problem then that,” Scott said after closing the door.

He walked past me and sat on his bed, motioning me to sit in the single chair.

“Scott just called the Professor,” Logan said. He was lying on his own bed, back against the headboard, and a can of coke in his hand.

“Did you inform him of what’s been happening?”

“He wasn’t there,” Scott frowned. “It wasn’t the right number. An old lady picked it up.”

“Don’t tell me you forgot the number?”

“No, of course not,” he sighed. “Logan tried calling, and he got the same lady. It’s the wrong number. I also tried to call Jean through our link, but I can’t feel her, or the Professor.”

“This is strange…”

“Well,” Logan stretched, “we can’t do anything, so we might as well call it a night.”

“I suppose so,” I got up and went to the door. “Wake me in the morning. I have enough cash on me for another night, but no more than that. I’m guessing both of your bank accounts are gone, like mine. So we have no money ‘cept what we have on us. After it’s all gone, we’re lost.”

“Hopefully everything will be straightened out by tomorrow,” Scott said. “’night.”

“’night you guys.”

“No F’en way. What the hell happened to her?”

I stared in shock at Silvie Marin. Or at least the thirty somewhat version of Silvie Marin.

“What the fuck is going on?” Logan growled, his face darkening as he stared at the older
woman. Next to her stood her two sons: Gregory and Stephan, the twins. Two very grown up looking twins.

“The last time I saw those two brats was when they were playing on the monkey bars in the third grade!” Scott ran his hand through his hair in frustration. “What the hell is going on around here?”

“What was Silvies mutant ability?”

“We’re not certain,” he sighed. “Professor X had seen her using Cerebro, yet he had no idea what her power was. He sent us to get her and find out what it is.”

“Maybe it’s time warping?” I said almost questionably.

“If it was, then she must have sent us about ten years into the future.”

“Hold on,” Logan turned to us, “if that’s the case then what happened to the Prof? Where’s the school? And what happened to Wings’ money?”

Scott leaned back in the driver’s seat heavily.

“I don’t know.”

I leaned forward and looked out across the street again.

Both Gregory and Stephan looked so exactly the same, nobody but family and the closest friends would be able to tell them apart. They both had long blond hair that reached to their waist, slightly curly. I knew from seeing them at the age of eight that they both had blue eyes. They must have gotten most their looks from their father, ‘cause Silvies hair was a light brown though she had blue eyes

“I wonder if Silvie would remember us.”

“I doubt it,” Scott looked back at me, his sunglasses covering his eyes. “We should probably follow them. Each one of us tags one of them, see what they do. I’ll follow Silvie, try to talk to her and see whether or not she does remember us. You guys go ahead and follow Stephen and Gregory, if they split up, you split up.”

“Sure thing, Slim,” Logan smirked, and got out of the car.

“We’ll follow them till they go home tonight, then we’ll all meet back at my room later.”

“Okay. Be careful, we don’t know what else has changed around here.”

“Right.”

I exited the jeep and followed Logan into the mall that we saw the twins go into. Scott drove off after Silvie. This is gonna be a very long day.
