A/N: This is another DARK one people! You are forewarned.
It wasn't a calm night; it was more still and slightly eerie. The night sky was clear and the air was cold, leaving puffs of breath with every exhale, that clouded about your head and rose up into the night sky like a silent signal flare.
The air had an electricity to it, a taste unlike that of the day, and arms hugged to chest to keep body heat from escaping. There was no sound at all, no passing cars, or wayward animals, and that should have been enough.
But Jenna Sonders was a creature of the night, or so she liked to believe. After all, her mutation gave her excellent vision in the dark, so excellent in fact, that she rarely went out during the sunlight hours, even with a pair of sunglasses. Her eyes were sensitive.
It had changed her life. Once she'd been a beach bum. Content to laze her days away in the sun under the warm sand. School wasn't as important as the waves, or the glory of the sun's warmth. Nothing was quite like her lifestyle.
And then she became a mutant. And all that changed.
Her skin was pale now, instead of golden. Her eyes flashed in dark areas, little orbs of reflected color, that gave away her presence. Her movements were graceful and she hardly made a sound, even when she ran. Even when she tried.
What was that?
Jenna turned, eyes scanning, but saw nothing. She turned warily, pulling up the collar of her jacket, to cover her neck. She turned into an alley. It was never a good idea, for a young girl to do as such. Not when she was pretty and alone. But, Jenna figured, by now, her superior abilities were her security. She'd be able to see, and move and jump high and be safe. This way she could loose whatever she felt tracking her in the dark.
She'd been walking no more than a minute, into the inky depths, when she felt a sudden head rush, and nearly swooned. Bracing herself against a wall, she placed a palm to her temple and shook her head. After blinking a few times, her eyesight grew considerably poorer, and it was then she realzed she was in trouble.
Unused to this lack of superior sight, she nervously scrambled blindly down the alley, one hand against the wall, the other out in front of her. Her body felt heavy and weak. The faster she tried to go, the more panicked she became. Even without her abilities, she knew it was there. It was coming. And it was amused, getting off on her weakness.
She hadn't even tripped, when arms went about her waist. She screamed, but the sound was muffled by a clothed hand cupped over her face. She choked and screamed again, kicking out blindly, and scrabbling at the arm about her shoulders.
It was a he, she could tell. Oh, could she tell...And she cried, and tried to scream again, as he dragged her back into the shadows.
